What should I feed a budgie?

Formulated pellets should be the base of the diet, with fresh vegetables alongside. Seed and millet are treats, not a staple. A seed-based diet leads to selective eating and nutritional gaps, and it's one of the most common causes of preventable illness in pet birds.

Why seed-only diets fail

Given a seed mix, budgies pick out their favourites and leave the rest — so even a "balanced" mix becomes an unbalanced diet in practice. The favourites are typically high in fat and low in the vitamins and minerals birds need.

The consequences build slowly: vitamin A deficiency, fatty liver disease, and poor feather condition. Because it develops over months or years, owners rarely connect it to the food bowl.

Converting a seed-addicted bird

Budgies are neophobic — genuinely suspicious of new food — so conversion takes patience, often weeks. Offer pellets alongside the usual seed rather than removing seed abruptly.

Never starve a bird onto pellets. Birds have very high metabolisms and can decline dangerously fast. Monitor weight and droppings during any transition, and involve an avian vet if your bird isn't eating.

What else belongs in the bowl

Fresh vegetables daily — leafy greens, carrot, capsicum. A cuttlebone or mineral block for calcium. Avoid avocado, chocolate, caffeine and anything salted; several are genuinely toxic to birds.

A wellness check, not a diagnosis — and never a replacement for your vet. If something seems wrong with your animal, see a veterinarian.

Common questions

Can budgies live on seed alone?

They can survive but not thrive. Seed-only diets cause nutritional deficiencies and shorten life expectancy considerably.

How do I get my budgie to eat pellets?

Offer pellets alongside seed and be patient — conversion often takes weeks. Never withhold food to force the change.

Do budgies need a cuttlebone?

Yes, it's a useful calcium source and one of the few supplements genuinely worth providing routinely.
