How long do budgies live?

Budgies typically live 5 to 10 years, with well-cared-for birds reaching 15 years or more. Diet is the single largest modifiable factor — seed-only diets substantially shorten lifespan, while a pellet-based diet with fresh vegetables extends it.

Why the range is so wide

Lifespan in budgies is unusually responsive to husbandry. Nutrition, air quality, cage size and access to avian veterinary care each move the number meaningfully. A budgie on a seed-only diet in a small cage may not reach five; the same bird well kept can double that.

This is different from many species where genetics dominate. With budgies, owner decisions do most of the work.

What extends it

A pellet-based diet with daily fresh vegetables. Flight space and out-of-cage time. Avoiding airborne toxins — non-stick cookware fumes are lethal to birds, as are aerosols, scented candles and smoke. An annual avian vet check.

Mental stimulation matters too. Budgies are flock animals; a solitary bird with no interaction and no enrichment does poorly.

Lifespan across pet birds

Budgies sit at the shorter end of parrot lifespans. Cockatiels commonly reach 15–20 years, and larger parrots can live 50 to 80 — which is why species choice deserves real thought about the decades ahead.
