What do I need for a new puppy?

The genuine essentials: puppy food (growth formula, large-breed specific if applicable), bowls, a flat collar and lead, ID tag, a crate or bed, toys including chew toys, cleaning supplies for accidents, and a vet appointment in the first week. Nearly everything else can wait.

What actually matters in week one

A vet visit to confirm health status and plan the vaccination series. Bringing whatever records the breeder or shelter provided.

Setting up a small, safe, confined space rather than giving free run of the house. Puppies do better with less territory to start.

Starting toilet routine immediately — out after waking, eating, playing, and every hour or two in between.

What you can genuinely skip at first

Expensive beds, which get chewed. Full sets of grooming equipment before you know their coat. Multiple harness styles before knowing their size — puppies grow out of everything quickly.

Treats in bulk. Start small until you know what they tolerate and what motivates them.

The socialisation window

The period up to about 16 weeks shapes the adult dog more than any training later. Whatever they meet now — people, sounds, surfaces, other animals — sets what feels safe for life.

Because the vaccination series isn't finished during this window, do this carefully: known vaccinated dogs, carried outings, controlled environments. Avoid dog parks and areas where unknown dogs toilet.

Budget honestly

Beyond supplies, the recurring costs are food, parasite prevention, vaccinations and annual exams. Setting aside for unexpected veterinary care matters more than any product on the shopping list.
