Puppy vaccination schedule

Puppies get a series of DHPP vaccines: the first at 6–8 weeks, a second at 10–12 weeks, and a final dose at 14–16 weeks (at 16 weeks or later), with the first rabies shot given between 12 and 16 weeks depending on local law. Boosters follow at around one year.

What the vaccines cover

DHPP protects against distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus and parainfluenza. Parvo in particular is the reason the series matters — it's common, it's brutal, and it kills unvaccinated puppies.

Bordetella (kennel cough) and leptospirosis may be added depending on lifestyle: boarding, daycare, grooming, or time in areas with standing water and wildlife.

Why the series can't be rushed

Puppies carry antibodies from their mother that gradually fade. Those antibodies also block vaccines from taking properly, and the fade-out point varies between individuals. The series exists to cover that uncertainty — which is why the final dose must land at 16 weeks or later.

Until the series is complete, avoid dog parks and places where unknown dogs toilet. Socialisation still matters enormously during this window — do it with known, vaccinated dogs and in controlled settings.

After the puppy series

Boosters for DHPP and rabies at around one year, then DHPP roughly every three years and rabies every one to three years depending on local law. Parasite prevention — heartworm, fleas and ticks — runs monthly, year-round.

Common questions

When can a puppy go outside after vaccinations?

Generally about a week after the final dose at 16 weeks or later. Before that, controlled socialisation with known vaccinated dogs is still important.

How many shots does a puppy need?

Typically three DHPP doses between 6 and 16 weeks, plus rabies, then boosters at around one year.

What happens if a puppy misses a vaccine?

Contact your vet — depending on the gap they may resume the series or restart it. Don't simply skip the missed dose.
