What does it cost to own a dog?

Beyond the initial supplies, the recurring costs are food, parasite prevention, vaccinations and annual exams, and grooming where the coat requires it. Size drives most of the variation — a giant breed can cost several times a small breed to feed and medicate, since drug doses scale with weight.

Size is the biggest multiplier

Food scales with body weight, but so does nearly everything dosed by weight: parasite prevention, medications, anaesthesia. A 120 lb dog is not twice a 60 lb dog in cost terms, it is often more.

Giant breeds also reach senior age earlier, meaning more years of twice-yearly exams and age-related care.

The costs people underestimate

Dental care. Periodontal disease is extremely common and treatment under anaesthesia is not cheap — which is why prevention matters financially as well as medically.

Emergency care. This is the one that breaks budgets, and it is unpredictable by definition.

Grooming for coats that require it. A poodle-type coat needs professional grooming every six to eight weeks for life.

Budgeting realistically

Build a buffer for unexpected veterinary costs, whether through insurance or dedicated savings. The specific figure depends on your region and your dog's size.

Preventive spending genuinely reduces lifetime cost: parasite prevention, dental care and keeping weight healthy prevent conditions that are far more expensive to treat than to avoid.

Where you can sensibly economise

Food does not need to be premium to be complete and balanced. Toys and beds do not need to be expensive. Supplements are usually unnecessary for a healthy dog.

What is not worth economising on: parasite prevention, dental care, and going to the vet when something is wrong.

Common questions

What is the most expensive part of owning a dog?

Unexpected veterinary care, followed by food and preventive medication. Both scale sharply with the dog's size.

Are big dogs more expensive than small dogs?

Considerably. Food and any weight-dosed medication scale with size, and larger breeds reach senior age earlier.

How can I reduce the cost of owning a dog?

Preventive care, maintaining a healthy weight, and skipping unnecessary supplements. Don't economise on parasite prevention or dental care.
