How do I know if my pet's food is right for them?

Assess four things after about eight weeks on a food: body condition (ribs easily felt, visible waist), coat (glossy, not dull or flaky), energy (stable and appropriate for age), and stools (firm and consistent). If all four are good, the food suits them.

Why eight weeks

Coat quality and body condition change slowly. Judging a food after a week measures novelty and palatability, not nutrition. Skin cell turnover and coat growth take weeks to reflect a dietary change.

Digestive adjustment also takes time — loose stools in the first days of a switch usually reflect the speed of the change rather than the food itself.

Reading each signal

Body condition is the most objective. You should feel ribs easily under a thin fat layer and see a waist from above. This is the signal most owners misread, usually in the generous direction.

Coat should be glossy and even. Dull, brittle or flaky coat, or excessive shedding, can indicate a nutritional issue — or parasites, allergies or thyroid disease, so it is a prompt to investigate rather than to switch foods immediately.

Stools should be firm and consistent. Persistently loose stools beyond a transition period warrant attention. So does straining.

When food is not the problem

Itching, ear infections, poor coat and digestive upset can all be dietary — but they are equally often parasites, environmental allergies, or endocrine disease. Repeatedly switching foods is a common way to delay finding the real cause.

If two well-chosen complete foods both produce the same problem, the food is probably not the variable.

Species-specific checks

For rabbits and guinea pigs, the key indicator is dropping volume and consistency, and whether they are eating enough hay — pellets alone will not maintain dental or digestive health.

For birds, droppings and weight are the useful signals; a bird selectively eating seed from a mix can look fine while becoming deficient.

Common questions

How long before I know if a pet food is working?

About eight weeks. Coat and body condition change too slowly to judge sooner.

What are signs my pet's food does not suit them?

Poor body condition, dull or flaky coat, low energy, or persistently loose stools beyond a transition period.

Should I switch foods if my pet is itchy?

Not immediately. Itching is often parasites or environmental allergies rather than diet. Investigate with a vet before repeatedly changing food.
