Can AI tell if my dog is sick?

Only partly. AI can flag visible changes — inflamed gums, eye discharge, skin problems, poor body condition. It cannot detect internal illness, pain, or most of what makes a dog genuinely unwell. Behaviour remains your most reliable signal, and it outranks any screening result.

What behaviour tells you that photos cannot

A dog that is lethargic, off food, drinking more, restless at night, reluctant to jump, or simply not themselves is telling you something no photograph captures.

Owners consistently underrate this. "He's just not right" is a legitimate clinical observation and vets take it seriously, because owners know their animal's normal better than anyone.

What visual screening does catch

Dental disease, which is extremely common and often unnoticed until advanced. Skin and coat problems. Eye and ear conditions. Body condition drift in either direction.

These are worth catching. They are also, notably, the conditions most likely to be dismissed as cosmetic until they become painful.

The failure mode to avoid

The risk with any screening tool is false reassurance. A dog with early kidney disease will photograph perfectly. So will a dog in pain from arthritis, or one with a heart murmur.

So the rule is simple: if behaviour is off, go to the vet regardless of what any tool says. Screening adds information; it never subtracts the need for judgement.

Using both together

The productive combination is structured visual checks for things you would otherwise miss, plus your own daily observation of behaviour for things no image shows. Neither replaces the other, and neither replaces a vet.

A wellness check, not a diagnosis — and never a replacement for your vet. If something seems wrong with your animal, see a veterinarian.

Common questions

Can an app tell if my dog is sick?

Only for visible signs. Internal illness, pain and most serious conditions are not visible in a photograph.

What are the most reliable signs a dog is unwell?

Behavioural changes — lethargy, appetite loss, increased thirst, restlessness or reluctance to move. These outrank any visual screening.

Should I trust an AI pet health result?

Treat it as additional information. A concerning result is worth acting on; a reassuring one should never override abnormal behaviour.
